Just who is Man City’s new signing Sergio Aguero?

He has just completed a medical at Manchester City who have yet to confirm the finalities of the deal, which is expected to be completed tomorrow, but it is anticipated there will be no last-minute hitches.

Just after touching down in the north-west earlier in the day, Aguero wrote on Twitter: “Just arrived in Manchester to finalise the details of signing with City.

“Everything is going very well! I’ll tell you more in a while.”

City’s previous record signing was Robinho, who arrived from Real Madrid for £32.5million as new owner Sheikh Mansour, a member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, made a marquee signing to signal his intent just days after taking over in August 2008.

The Aguero deal is believed to be closer to £38million, the value of the buy-out clause inserted in the new contract the player signed with Atletico in January.

He is reportedly set to agree a five-year contract worth about £200,000 per week – although that will not be a stumbling block for City, who have spent millions revamping the squad and the area around the stadium with much grander plans to come.

With City striker Carlos Tevez adamant he wants to leave to be nearer his wife and two daughters in Argentina, Aguero is seen as the ideal replacement.

Younger than his compatriot by four years, the Atletico star has been a prolific goalscorer in the Primera Division and that is why he became one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.

Here are some interesting facts about the player known as ‘Kun’.

  • He’s commonly known by his childhood nickname ‘Kun’, given to Aguero by his grandparents on account of his resemblance to this 70s Japanese cartoon character Kun Kun.
  • He started his footballing career at Argentine side Independeinte, and broke Diego Maradaona’s record for being the youngest player ever to play in the country’s top-flight when making his debut against San Lorenzo aged just 15 years and 35 days. “I was a lot younger and smaller than most of the players, so I had to learn how to avoid and dodge aggressive tackles,” remembers Aguero of the experience.
  • His impressive return of 23 goals in 53 league appearances for Independiente attracted the attention of Europe’s top scouts, and Aguero was eventually signed by Atletico Madrid in May 2006 for £20m – the club’s record transfer fee.
  • He made his La Liga debut for Atletico against Racing Santander on August 27, 2006 and scored his first league goal for the club against Bilbao the following month. Despite going on to make 38 appearances that season, Aguero struggled to shine while playing in the shadow of Atletico’s star striker Fernando Torres, and only scored five more goals.
  • He showed his true form following Torres’ departure to Liverpool, however, forming a lethal partnership with his replacement, former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan, and finishing the 2007-08 season as La Liga’s third highest goalscorer with 19 goals. He continued that formidable partnership the following season, including a brace from each of them in a memorable 4-2 victory over Barcelona.
  • He’s won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup twice with Argentina, first in 2005, when he played alongside Lionel Messi, and then again in 2007, when he captained the side and scored in the final. Aguero also took home the Golden Boot for being the tournament’s top scorer with six goals. He made his senior debut for Argentina in a friendly against at Arsenal’s Emirates stadium in September 2006. He’s since won a total of 30 caps and scored 13 goals, including two in Argentina’s 2008 Olympics semi-final win over Brazil.
  • Aguero’s wife Giannini is the daughter of Argentina’s former national coach and all-round legend, Diego Maradona. The couple’s first child, Benjamin, was born in February 2009. Given his gene pool, we imagine he could be quite a player.
  • He has a tattoo on the inside of his right arm, inscribed in Tengwar (a form of writing invented by JRR Tolkien and used by the Elves in his books). It roughly translates to ‘Kun Aguero’ in the Latin alphabet.
