Liverpool: Premier League 2011-12 preview

Liverpool ended last season on a high and will want to start the new season on the same footing after making some key signings. The stats showed that Liverpool would’ve ended up in second place had they racked up the same amount of points in the first-half of last season. But, there were two defeats at the business end of last season that exposed their soft centre and lack of squad depth, and Kenny Dalglish would’ve been conscious about strengthening in those key areas.

Charlie Adam could be Liverpool’s answer to Xabi Alonso’s passing range they so badly miss. It all depends on how well and quickly everyone settles in  before the team start playing as a unit after a very disappointing pre-season showing. In fairness Dalglish was probably putting his bit-part players in the shop window in hope they will be sold sooner. On paper Liverpool have a very strong midfield now with Stewart Downing marauding down the wing and Jordan Henderson providing cover across the park especially now with the injured captain Steven Gerrard struggling with a niggling groin injury. If the skipper can play in at least 85% of their games then they have a big chance of securing Champions League football. Alberto Aquilani seems to have benefited from plying his trade in Serie A on loan with Juventus, and looks like he could make an impact if given the chance as fans have seen glimpses of his ability in recent matches.

Up front Andy Carroll looks like he is back to full fitness and will want to justify the record £35m fee they paid for him. Luis Suarez was the highlight of Liverpool’s second-half of last season and he’ll be eager to continue from where he he left off after being named Copa America player of the tournament. He could potentially end up with the Golden Boot.

Key Player: Luis Suarez

Prediction: 4th
