The world’s fiercest city football rivalries

In the build-up to this weekend’s Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton,  and North London’s football rivalry between Tottenham and Arsenal, we look at some of the world’s fiercest city football rivalries.

There are so many that come to mind but the ones that are often televised are: Liverpool vs Everton; Tottenham vs Arsenal; Celtic vs Rangers; Man United vs City; Inter vs AC Milan and Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid.

But the one that tops the list in terms of violence and hatred has to be Turkey’s Fenerbahce vs Galatasary – which takes place in Istanbul and is arguably the fiercest derby in the world. The two clubs are separated by the Bosphorus Sea, with Galatasary on the European side and Fenerbahce on the Asian side. Turkish fans have a reputation in football for being hugely passionate and at times violent. Both clubs have there own sections of extremist fans who take supporting their club beyond the normal levels and are usually the ones who start the violence. The atmosphere in Istanbul can build up weeks before this match and on the match day itself the stadium will be full of flares, smoke, drums, banners and chanting.  In the Galatasary stadium the home fans call this the ‘welcoming to Hell’.

The list of the rest:
