Chelsea are the best team in the world, while Real Madrid are the seventh best and Manchester United are 19th.

This is according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, an organisation recognised and supported by, although not affiliated with, FIFA.

Their latest Club World Rankings, accounting for results between March 1 2012 and February 28 2013, have produced some results that seem bizarre.

In second place are Atletico Madrid and third, Chelsea’s vanquished Champions League final opponents Bayern Munich.

Fourth are Club World Cup champions Corinthians, while the mighty Barcelona are down in fifth.

The rankings are calculated by including results from national league matches, continental and intercontinental competitions and the most important national cup competition, ignoring results before the last 16 phase.

Results are awarded points depending on the level of competition. A draw in a national league game is worth two points and a win is four.

Champions League draws and wins are worth seven and 14 respectively, while Club World Cup semi-finals are worth the same.

A win in the Club World Cup final is worth 21 points – which explains how high up Corinthians are.

Celtic are level with Manchester United in 19th, while Liverpool are 25th, Tottenham 37th and Arsenal 50th.

Premier League Champions Manchester City languish in 56th, largely because of their shoddy Champions League showings.

Deloitte have released their annual football money league, ranking clubs based on their revenue last season.

While the top two sides, Real Madrid and Barcelona, may hail from Spain, clubs in England have fared strongly.

1. Club: REAL MADRID
Position (last year): 1 (1)
Revenue (last year): £414.7 (£433)

Real Madrid remain the club with the highest revenue for a record equalling eighth year, matching Manchester United’s reign from 1996/97 to 2003/04. Winning La Liga and progressing to the semi-finals of the Champions League saw them become the first club in any sport to surpass the €500m revenue threshold in a single year.

Here is a look at the top 10:

2. Club: BARCELONA
Position: 2 (2)
Revenue: £390.8 (£407)

Barcelona complete the Spanish one-two. Last season was disappointing by the Catalans’ recent standards, failing to win the league or European Cup. However, their marketability shows no signs of ebbing, particularly with Lionel Messi at the heart of the side.

3. Club: MANCHESTER UNITED
Position: 3 (3)
Revenue: £320.3 (£331.4)

Despite not winning a single trophy last season, Manchester United remain the highest ranked club in England. The huge capacity of Old Trafford and worldwide fanbase make up the shortfall.

4. Club: BAYERN MUNICH
Position: 4 (4)
Revenue: £298.1 (£290.3)

The top ranked German club were aided by their run to the Champions League final in which they were beaten by Chelsea on penalties. The arrival of Pep Guardiola in the summer is likely to see their global appeal increase.

5. Club: CHELSEA
Position: 5 (5)
Revenue: £261 (£228.6)

Becoming European champions for the first time in their history helped Chelsea cling onto fifth place in the money league. However, their early exit from this season’s competition and the capacity constraints of Stamford Bridge could see them slip down next year.

6. Club: ARSENAL
Position: 6 (6)
Revenue: £234.9 (£226.8)

The money league will serve to frustrate Arsenal fans as yet again the club’s financial might is laid bare, and yet Arsene Wenger’s frugal spending in the transfer market continues.

7. Club: MANCHESTER CITY
Position: 7 (12)
Revenue: £231.1 (£153.2)

Manchester City make the biggest leap up the table thanks to their Premier League winning exploits and participation in the Champions League. It seems only a matter of time before they oust Arsenal and Chelsea from above them.

8. Club: AC MILAN
Position: 8 (7)
Revenue: £207.9 (£212)

They may have sold all their star assets but the global appeal of the San Siro based side remains.

9. Club: LIVERPOOL
Position: 9 (9)
Revenue: £188.7 (£183.6)

Despite their continued absence from the Champions League, the global appeal of Liverpool sees them remain at ninth in the money league. Last season’s cup exploits, which saw them win the Carling Cup and make the final of the FA Cup will have helped.

10. Club: JUVENTUS
Position: 10 (13)
Revenue: £158.1 (£139)

Juventus climb three places in the table thanks to their unbeaten Serie A winning exploits of last season.

The top 20 list in full:

1 Real Madrid €512.6m

2 Barcelona €483.0m

3 Manchester United €395.9m

Lionel Messi will take on Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta as he bids to be named the best player in the world for the fourth successive year.

The Spain-based trio have been named on the shortlist for the FIFA Ballon d’Or award.

Barcelona superstar Messi has enjoyed an incredible year with 82 goals in 2012 to leave him three behind former West Germany and Bayern Munich striker Gerd Muller’s record of 85, set in 1972.

His biggest rival for the award is Ronaldo who scored a phenomenal 60 goals in all competitions last season as Real Madrid edged Barca to La Liga title. He has already bagged another 19 this season.

Third nominee Iniesta also enjoyed an outstanding year for Barca while he was named player of the tournament for Spain at Euro 2012 as he guided his side to victory over Italy in the final.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said: “It shows how strong football in Spain is.

“We have seen again what they did at the Euros and it will be interesting to see what happens in the Confederations Cup.”

There was also a Spanish theme to the FIFA World Coach of the Year award.

Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque is up against former Barca manager Pep Guardiola and current Madrid coach Jose Mourinho for the title.

All the winners will be announced on January 7.

Lionel Messi has passed Pele’s milestone of goals in a calendar year by scoring for the 75th and 76th time in 2012.

The Argentine moved within nine of Gerd Muller’s all-time record and helped Barcelona win 4-2 at Mallorca in La Liga.

Xavi Hernandez scored in the 28th minute before Messi struck in the 44th. Cristian Tello added a third goal a minute later.

Mallorca replied twice but Messi made it 4-2 as Barcelona rebounded from their surprising 2-1 defeat at Celtic in the Champions League.

Pele scored 75 goals in 1958. Muller netted 85 in 1972.

Muller will perhaps be discouraged to hear that Messi is chasing another of his records having already surpassed one last season.

The prolific German hitman scored 67 goals for Bayern Munich in the 1972-73 season.

This remained the highest tally in a European club season until the diminutive Messi scored 73 for Barcelona in the 2011-12 campaign.

La Liga champions Real Madrid were indebted to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and substitute Alvaro Morata in a 2-1 win at waterlogged Levante.

Ronaldo sustained a nasty cut above his left eye when he was caught by David Navarro’s elbow in Valencia but still went on to score.

The Premier League has confirmed the creation of a new Under-21 competition to bridge the gap between clubs’ academies and their first team.

The first national showcase for Under-21 players will launch on 17 August when Chelsea host Manchester City and Reading visit West Ham. Teams from 17 Premier League and six Championship clubs – in effect all those who applied for category one status – will be divided into three groups.

From January the sides will then be placed into three pools based on their performance, leading to a knockout stage and final. The emphasis will be on playing Under-21 players with each team limited to three over-age outfield players and one over-age goalkeeper.

“Each stage of a player’s development is tailored to ensuring they have the best possible chance of progressing,” said Richard Scudamore, the Premier League chief executive.

“The new league addresses one of the most critical points – the transition from academy football to the highest standards in the first team.

“We believe this competitive environment, where fans can also come along to watch the next generation of Premier League and international players, will help deliver more talented home grown boys to that next level.”

National Group 1: Arsenal, Blackburn, Bolton, Everton, Norwich, Reading, West Brom, West Ham.

National Group 2: Aston Villa, Manchester United, Newcastle, Southampton, Stoke, Sunderland, Tottenham, Watford.

National Group 3: Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Middlesbrough, Wolves.

The end-of-season win-bonus package paid to Manchester City’s triumphant squad for securing the club’s first Premier League title in May was a huge £6.2m shared between 24 players, The Independent can reveal.

The club’s bonus scheme, agreed at the start of the season with the entire first-team squad, decreed that the players would receive £5.2m for winning the Premier League and an extra £1m for it being an unprecedented achievement for City in the modern era.

However, City’s players earned nothing for their Champions League performances. They stood to net a massive £7.25m if they won the competition – a long shot, given that it was their first appearance in the new format – but went out in the group stages despite having accrued 10 points. Any bonus for the City players was contingent on them progressing to the knockout stages of the competition.

The bonus schedule gives a fascinating insight into the incentives for City’s squad, upon which owner Sheikh Mansour has spent £452m in transfer fees alone over four years, to follow up their FA Cup triumph in 2011 with more silverware. All leading clubs pay their players bonuses which, under Football Association rules, have to be agreed upon at the start of the season.

City’s players would have collected £4.7m even if they had finished second to Manchester United on the last day of the season and there was £4.2m at stake for third place. Sergio Aguero’s injury-time goal against Queen’s Park Rangers on that frenetic last day of the season was effectively worth £1.5m to the squad bonus pool, quite apart from the history it made for the club.

Had Roberto Mancini’s squad finished fourth they would have earned £3.7m although there was a caveat to that bonus that it would only be paid in the event of fourth place also qualifying the club for this coming season’s Champions League competition. In the event, the team that finished fourth, Tottenham Hotspur, were denied that place by Chelsea’s triumph in the competition.

The payments were made pro-rata with a basic calculation over the league season dictating that one league appearance was worth £11,472. Joe Hart was the only City player who played in all 38 league games, earning him £446,212.

Nevertheless, even the bonus payments are eclipsed by the huge wages paid to the City players. On £220,000 a week, Yaya Touré would effectively have earned the same amount net in one month as Hart earned gross in his bonus payments for the entire season.

Many elite clubs who pay such vast basic wages to players are now incentivising them with lump sum payments according to what they win at the end of the season, rather than the traditional win bonus paid according to individual results, that were the norm in the past. However, some players will have additional bonus schemes built into their contracts

Under City’s bonus schedule, Owen Hargreaves, Nedum Onuoha and Abdul Razak will all have earned the minimum £11,472 payments for their single league appearances. David Pizarro earned £58,710 for his five, consolation for missing out on a winners’ medal, which requires 10 appearances.

The squad would have shared £1m for making the quarter-finals of the Champions League, £2m for reaching the semis and £3m for finishing runners-up. By contrast, winning the Europa League, from which they eliminated in the last 16, would have been worth the relatively modest total of £828,000 to the players’ bonus pool.

The hierarchy of the financial value of the other domestic competitions is also telling. The squad were on £500,000 to win the FA Cup and £250,000 to win the Carling Cup.

The English Premier League team, owned by the same American family that owns the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is ranked on top thanks to lucrative global sponsorship deals.

Second is Real Madrid, at $1.88 billion. The New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys are tied for third at $1.85 billion.

Rounding out the top five are the Washington Redskins at $1.56 billion.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New England Patriots are tied for sixth at $1.40 billion, followed by Barcelona at $1.31 billion, the New York Giants at $1.30 billion, and Arsenal at 1.29 billion. The Dodgers recently were sold for $2 billion, the most for any professional sports team.

All 32 NFL teams make the list of 50 most valuable franchises, with the Jacksonville Jaguars last among the NFL clubs at $725 million.

Seven Major League Baseball teams earned spots, with the Texas Rangers the lowest at $674 million, No. 50 overall.

The highest value for an NBA team belongs to the Los Angeles Lakers at $900 million, 35th overall. Only one other NBA franchise, the New York Knicks, make the list with $780 million, No. 43.

No NHL clubs made the survey, but two from Formula One racing were included: Ferrari at $1.1 billion to rank 15th, and McLaren at $800 million.

Shinji Kagawa has revealed that he turned down Manchester United’s iconic No 7 shirt as he wants to prove himself at Old Trafford before taking such an honour.

The Japan star flew into Manchester on Friday to tie up the loose ends on his £17million transfer from Borussia Dortmund, passing his medical and agreeing a four-year contract with the Red Devils.

He has also now obtained a UK work permit. But the 23-year-old midfielder admitted he wasn’t yet ready to take up the club’s offer of the No 7 shirt, made famous by the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Instead, Kagawa has asked for a shirt with ‘personal meaning’. He wore the No 23 shirt with Dortmund. Michael Owen wore the No 7 shirt for United last season but the former England striker has now been released.

‘I’ve just joined the team and haven’t accomplished anything yet,’ said Kagawa. ‘I want to make a name for myself [at United] on my own terms.’

Kagawa also revealed that his visit to Old Trafford to sign his contract has already sparked dreams of his first goal for United at the world-renowned stadium.

‘When I was at [Old Trafford], I thought about how incredible it would be if I could score there,’ Kagawa added.

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed his delight at securing such an exciting young talent.

‘Shinji is an exciting young midfielder with great skill, vision and a good eye for goal,’ said Ferguson. ‘I am delighted he has chosen to come to United. I believe he will make an impact upon the team very quickly as he is suited to United’s style of play. We are all looking forward to working with him.’

Kagawa said: ‘This is a challenge I am really looking forward to. The Premier League is the best league in the world and Manchester United is such a massive club.

‘This is a really exciting time for me and I can’t wait to meet the team and start playing.’

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was awarded with his second ESM Golden shoe for scoring the most goals in Europe – with a record total.

Messi scored an incredible 50 league goals during the 2011-12 season to finish four goals ahead of his closest rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid winger scored six more goals than when winning the award last season but could not rival the prolific Argentinian.

This is the second Golden Shoe award picked up by Messi who also claimed the accolade in the 2009-10 season with 34 goals.

His record haul came from 37 La Liga appearances and included six hat-tricks and two four-goal games.

It was a good season for strikers with Robin van Persie, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney also recording their highest-ever tallies for a league campaign.

ESM Golden Shoe standings
1. Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona) 50 x 2 = 100
2. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid CF) 46 x 2 = 92
3. Robin van Persie (Arsenal FC) 30 x 2 = 60
4. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (FC Schalke 04) 29 x 2 = 58
5. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (AC Milan) 28 x 2 = 56
6. Wayne Rooney (Manchester United FC) 27 x 2 = 54
7. Mario Gomez (FC Bayern München) 26 x 2 = 52
8. Bas Dost (sc Heerenveen) 32 x 1.5 = 48
8= Falcao (Club Atlético de Madrid) 24 x 2 = 48
8= Diego Milito (FC Internazionale Milano) 24 x 2 = 48
8= Burak Yilmaz (Trabzonspor A?) 32 x 1.5 = 48

Rules
Only the leading five countries – Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England – in the UEFA rankings have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between clubs from those countries and those of other nations.

A player cannot play first in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points totals for each season.

Cristiano Ronaldo likes to prance around the stadia of Europe is an array of flash-coloured boots.

But Real Madrid’s superstar striker found himself the butt of a German joke when his fancy footwear was nicked in Munich this week.

The Portuguese complained that three pairs of his precious boots were part of a haul thieves made off with from Real’s dressing room before kick-off in their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.

And now a local disc jockey has sent the former Manchester United player a pair of Bavarian brogues – as worn by traditional southern German dancers in the national costume.

Stephan Lehmann, a presenter on radio station Bayern 1 and also the Bayern Munich stadium announcer, appealed to his listeners for a pair of brogues to send to Ronaldo and some were donated by a shoemaker.

“We need Bavarian brogues, size 43, for the most expensive footballer in the world,” Lehmann said. The package also included a personal note to Ronaldo, telling him he would look “really snazzy” in the new footwear.

It read: “Dear Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Hospitable people live here in Bavaria. We may steal maypoles, but not shoes. We therefore wanted to replace what you lost.

“Here are a pair of genuine Bavarian brogues for you. With them you won’t be able to score any goals, but you will look really snazzy.

“Kind regards, Stephan Lehmann and the Bayern 1 team.”

Munich police are looking into the incident after Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil and Karim Benzema complained they had belongings nicked from their changing room.

Jose Mourinho’s side lost the game 2-1. The second leg will take place in the Spanish capital on Wednesday when Bayern may well hope Ronaldo plays in his new shoes.
