Rio Ferdinand reveals his best five-a-side team

Rio Ferdinand has lifted the lid on life at Manchester United.

The defender took part in a fans’ webchat, while on tour in the US, where he was quizzed on everything from new signings to his team-mates’ dress sense.

After nine years at Old Trafford, Ferdinand has enjoyed many a five-a-side in training.

And he was asked what his ideal line-up would be.

Ferdinand, 32, said: “The best five-a-side team I can think of, made up of players I’ve played with, would be Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Roy Keane. And me, of course.

“That team isn’t getting beaten. We don’t need a goalkeeper – we’d have the ball so much.

“Actually, I’d maybe pick Giggsy instead of Roy Keane. I can’t not have Giggsy in the team.”

While Rio hailed the old guard – like the recently retired Paul Scholes – he also saluted the new kid on the block in Javier Hernandez.

Chicharito, 23, scored 20 goals in his rookie season. And when questioned who the best player is in training, Ferdinand said: “It was Scholesy. Now I’d say Chicharito – he’s quite difficult.

“His movement’s great, but I like that because he keeps you guessing and on your toes.

“He’s the toughest but also the most beneficial opponent in training because he keeps you match-sharp.”

Ferdinand was grilled on United’s young defenders Chris Smalling, 21, and £16.5million new-boy Phil Jones, 19.

The pair appear primed to be the long-term successors to Rio and Nemanja Vidic.

But the ex-England captain insisted: “You can’t discount Jonny Evans either. It’s a bit out of order people have been saying it’s definitely going to be Chris and Phil.

“Jonny’s also one of the most talented central defenders in Great Britain.”

Another player to catch Ferdinand’s eye is Anderson – but not necessarily for good reasons.

Rio joked: “Anderson wears the worst footwear. Some days he comes into training in a pair of slippers!

“He wears crazy-patterned stuff that not many of us would wear.”

And competition is fierce off the pitch when United’s stars go head-to-head on the PlayStation, especially on football game FIFA.

Rio said: “Me and Wayne play together and our record at the moment is W16 D1 L1.

“We were beaten by Fabio and Rafael. Nani and Kiko (Federico Macheda) are like a married couple – they argue all the time. Me and Wayne are the top dogs though.”
