Wayne Rooney is the Premier League’s top tweeter

The Blues were top of the league again but this time it was in social media after a report claimed they were champions of interacting with supporters.

Several criteria were used to tally up the points of the premier league teams, including Twitter and Facebook followers, level of interaction with fans and ease of online access.

The mighty blues managed to crush the opposition, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs making up the top four but Manchester United languishing in a disappointing 8th place.

Despite having nearly 19 million Facebook fans, which is nearly three times that of Chelsea’s 7 million, The Red Devils were found to be using the page to mainly broadcast messages whereas Chelsea’s account was more interactive.

Digital strategist at Lewis Communications Alex Clough thinks that social media is key to the future of sport.

He said: ‘It’s important that clubs do not just use these social channels to broadcast their messages but also to open up an authentic dialogue with fans to answer queries and complaints as promptly and efficiently as possible.’

The Stamford Bridge club are also the only team with a press area on their website along with Wolves.

Man Utd didn’t lose in everything though; Wayne Rooney managed to secure top Tweeter due to his impressive following of 1,567,967.

He was joined on the list by his team-mate Rio Ferdinand who has 1,516,559 followers and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero who has 1,023,159.

It’s not all fun and games on Twiiter though with clubs having warned players of their conduct on the social media site.

QPR midfielder Joy Barton has got himself into several scrapes and Ryan Babel was fined £10,000 by the FA after he posted a mocked-up picture of referee Howard Webb in a Manchester United shirt.
