Player Ratings: FC Schalke 04 0 Manchester United 2

Two goals at the midway stage in the second half capped off a dominant display by Manchester United who are now firm favourites to progress to Wembley after a lacklustre display from Schalke at the Veltins Arena.

Man of the Match:

Manuel Neuer – 9

Even though his team never really pitched up on the night, Neuer’s face-saving performance kept the Schalke score down to just two, where it could have easily been four or five, and thus has earned him my Man Of The Match.

Schalke

Uchida – 5 – Rarely had the opportunity to go forward as Valencia pushed him back all evening.

Matip – 5 – Struggled to cope with the incisive runs of Hernandez and was found wanting

Metzelder – 5 – The German International simply could not keep out the ever-pressing United attack.

Sarpei – 4 – Was practically anonymous all evening. Park practically had him I’m his back pocket

Farfan – 4 – Struggled to make an impact on the game and did not track back at all.

Papadopoulos – 4 – Like Sarpei, he was non-existent for most of the match.

Jurado – 4 – Failed to make any sort of impact.

Baumjohann – 5 – Also non-existent for most of the tie, was sacrificed for Kluge early in the second half.

Raul – 6 – The old master never had a sniff at scoring for most of the game

Edu – 4 – Failed to put up a performance like the one he gave against Inter Milan.

Substitutions:

Kluge – 4 – Brought on to try to halt United’s attack, and failed to do so.

Escudero – 3 – Failed to make any impact on the tie

Draxler – Too little time to rate.

Manchester United

Van Der Sar – 8 – The evergreen Dutchman had very little to do on the night, and handled the odd Schalke chance well.

Evra – 8 – The French International was solid at the back, and had license to overlap the wingers all evening due to United’s wealth of possession

Ferdinand – 8 – Had a fairly easy evening at the back and kept the threat of Raul under wraps all evening.

Vidic – 8 – The Serbian, like his partner had a easy evening in United’s backline.

Fabio – 7 – The Brazillian twin enjoyed the freedom to attack on the overlap and made a barnstorming run that was unlucky to not put Rooney in for United’s opener

Carrick – 8 – The midfielder broke up any attacking threat the Schalke midfield produced to good effect.

Park – 8 – Industrious as usual, Park’s work rate ensured that United kept possession all evening

Giggs – 9 – Giggs made the United attack tick with his guile and vision. Made a brilliant run and slotted in United’s opener in the 67th minute.

Valencia – 8 – Ran riot on the right side of the midfield and left Uchida in the dust.

Hernandez – 8 – Had a few early chances which one would expect the Mexican to put away, and can find himself unfortunate to not be on the score sheet

Rooney – 9 – A 69th minute goal could have given United an easy path to Wembley. Played an integral part in Gigg’s opener with a clever throughball.

Substitutions:

Scholes – 6 – The midfield maestro fitted in perfectly to maintain United’s possession dominance.

Anderson – 6 – Slotted in comfortably into a midfield that over- ran Schalke.

Nani – 6 – The Portuguese had a few chances to get onto the score sheet late on in the tie.

Referee

Carlos Velasco Carballo (Spain) – 7 – Let the game flow at an exciting tempo and controlled the game wonderfully.

Agreed on your man of the match selection. I can now see why the clubs are chasing him. Massive presence and saved his team from further embaressment.

  2. Jarred Manasse says:

He was simply a cut above the rest. Expecting big things from this lad. He has the maturity of a keeper over the age of 30 already! There will definitly be a transfer scrap over him this summer.

I think his stock just went up to the £20-25m! Good luck and well done for whoever ends up buying him.

  4. Jarred Manasse says:

Too True. He is real value for money. But I think because of him being a keeper, he would pick his destination carefully. Unbiasedly, with Van Der Sar retiring, I think he might be favouring Manchester United.
